Devon solicitor websites: the November 2026 snapshot

For a law firm, the website is the front door. People check it before they ring, and they notice when it looks off. We looked at independent solicitors across Exeter and Devon to see how many front doors actually open properly. Anonymised, as always.

What we checked, and how

On 1 November 2026 we searched Google's business listings for solicitors and law firms in Exeter, Exmouth, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Tiverton, Crediton, Honiton, Plymouth, Barnstaple, Teignmouth and Dawlish. That gave 150 listings with a website. We dropped national firms, chains and listings that weren't firms, which left 110 sites. We only loaded public pages, like a visitor would.

03

What keeps going wrong

  • Folders anyone can browse

5 sites let anyone list the contents of their uploads folder. It's a setting, not a hack, but it hands out a full index of every file the firm has uploaded. For a law firm that's not a great look.

  • Old PHP

4 sites report PHP 7.2 or 7.4. Neither has had security fixes in years, and the 7.4 builds are below the PHP2Shell fixes from October.

  • Broken inner pages and buttons

On 2 of the 61 WordPress sites, links from the homepage go to 404 pages. One had renamed its service pages without adding redirects. On the other, only the homepage loads at all.

  • Certificates and redirects

One firm's security certificate expired in October, so every visitor gets a browser warning first. Another firm's secure homepage redirects to the insecure version. A third site is missing part of its certificate chain.

  • Sites that aren't there

Three listings lead to a hosting placeholder, a "new website on its way" page or a server that doesn't answer.

Wondering if your own site is in these numbers? You don't need us for a first look.

  1. Open your homepage, right-click, choose View Page Source and search for UA- and G-. Only UA-? Your analytics stopped counting in 2023.

  2. In wp-admin, open Dashboard > Updates, then Plugins. Anything waiting there is a fix you haven't got yet.

  3. Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on mobile and read the real-user section at the top.

  4. Search Google for your practice name, tap "Website" on your listing and check it lands on the right page, over https, with no warning.

Rather have a machine do the reading? Our free scan covers most of this in about a minute, and the hacked redirect check shows whether Google visitors get sent somewhere they shouldn't.
