Norfolk vet websites: the November 2026 snapshot

We went looking at the websites of independent vet practices across Norfolk and north Suffolk. Not the big chains, just the local practices where the website is often a job someone does on a Friday afternoon. Here's how they're doing, with no names attached.

What we checked, and how

On 3 November 2026 we searched Google's business listings for vets in Norwich and across Norfolk. That gave 66 listings with a website. We dropped the chains (Medivet, CVS, IVC, Linnaeus, Vets4Pets), which left 32 independent sites. Then we loaded each one the way a visitor would. Public pages only. We didn't log in anywhere or try anything clever.

What keeps going wrong

  • Slow servers

On 10 of the 32 sites, the server took longer than 2.5 seconds just to start sending the homepage. One took 7.8 seconds. That's before a single image loads. A pet owner on a phone in the car park won't wait that long.

  • Old WordPress and old PHP

One site still runs WordPress 6.0, from 2022. Another reports PHP 7.4, which stopped getting security fixes at the end of 2022. Old versions don't break the site, so nobody notices. They just keep missing every fix since.

  • A cache plugin behind on its security fixes

One practice runs a cache plugin with three security bugs that were fixed the week before we looked. The fix was one click away. It hadn't been clicked.

  • Analytics that stopped counting

One site still uses only Universal Analytics. Google stopped that recording data on 1 July 2023, so the site hasn't logged a visitor since. The reports look quiet because nothing is being counted.

Wondering if your own site is in these numbers? You don't need us for a first look.

  1. Open your homepage, right-click, choose View Page Source and search for UA- and G-. Only UA-? Your analytics stopped counting in 2023.

  2. In wp-admin, open Dashboard > Updates, then Plugins. Anything waiting there is a fix you haven't got yet.

  3. Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on mobile and read the real-user section at the top.

  4. Search Google for your practice name, tap "Website" on your listing and check it lands on the right page, over https, with no warning.

Rather have a machine do the reading? Our free scan covers most of this in about a minute, and the hacked redirect check shows whether Google visitors get sent somewhere they shouldn't.
